Queer Tulsa

Project Statement:

“Queer Tulsa” is a photo exhibit featuring portraits of twenty of Tulsa’s LGBTQIA+ community leaders who have inspired me in my own later in life coming out journey over the past few years. Despite any complications it may bring, each person has enriched our community and creative scene while being publicly out. While our governing forces write laws that specifically target and endanger queer citizens, these community members are just trying to survive, despite the feeling that people are identifying them as dangerous because of their sexual or gender identity. Each subject has also filled out an interview about their experience of living in Tulsa to bring their celebrations, struggles and the ways they contribute to our city to light and their answers will hang beside the portraits.

Artist bio:

Liz Cousins (she/her) has worked as a professional photographer in the Tulsa area for over two decades. Working in a mix of digital and film, she believes that photography is a way to record current culture for future historic preservation. Years before she found the ability to publicly join it, she began documenting Tulsa’s queer community as a way to support it . Her portrait work documents alternative lifestyles, performers, and those who live larger than life. Liz sells her art and photography as well as vintage wares in the Tulsa area under the brand Retrospective, and her day job involves working to support independent local artists in the Tulsa area.
