Silver Memory: Contemporary Sauk Metalsmithing

THRIVE Project, Silver Memory: Contemporary Sauk Metalsmithing explores memory evocation through reconnection to ancestral objects and the act of creation. Inspired by Sauk metal objects and jewelry at the National Museum of the American Indian, this body of work draws from a stylistic history of Sauk design from the Great Lakes region to Oklahoma. These contemporary works are presented in a setting familiarity in hopes of reflection and understanding of the Sauk visual language across mediums.

Silver Memory: Contemporary Sauk Metalsmithing is part of a larger conversation of revitalization of material culture and accompanying histories in the Sauk community by Janae Grass. Previous projects include IHKWÊWA: Sac and Fox Women’s Continuance and a series of beaded bags exploring the visual language of beadwork forms.
