Monstress is a display of a diverse group of women across the State of Oklahoma. The objective behind this show stems from women being told they are too much. Too big, too thin, too ugly, too pretty, too loud, too quiet, too political, too subdued, simply too much. Each woman featured was asked to provide work that represents to them what it is like to be too much for society. From actual monsters to figurative ones, each piece represents what it is like to be a woman in Oklahoma and the United States. Defining what it is like to be a female who feels like they are being measured by unobtainable standards. Many of these works are a catharsis to the emotional trials of these measurements, others are protests and wages of war against them and some are simply tributes to the beauty found in those we call monsters. Each artist comes to the project with something different to say. From traditional mediums to performance all of these artists have found a way to convey the rise of women as the monsters they are accused of being.
