Drawing Roller Drum (5)

Created on: 21 Mar 2026
Another Mad Scientist invention to draw precision spaced straight lines along a overhead marker stylus
  • The roller drum started as 24 (or to 26) square-cut pieces of pine board.
  • Each piece of wood had a hole drilled in the middle and was placed onto a 5/8 metal rod. Each piece was glue-laminated together. After the glue dried, the entire apparatus was rotated on a table saw
  • The final wood surface was coated with 5 coats of heavy polyurethane. The axle was mounted on two 10-inch utility wheels (with axle bearings)
  • A 18x25 bristol sheet can be "strapped" to the drum. The overhead marker stylus is adjusted 1/16 of an inch at time to form precision spaced straight lines. This piece: "Visual Eye Strain"
  • On a 18x24 bristol sheet, precision spaced lines can be drawn vertical. The bristol sheet can be rotated to form precision cross lines, hence a "fence" pattern.
