Too Native to be American, yet too American to be Native.
Artist Statement
Ms. Zah uses mass-produced items to create works that evoke nostalgia, tenderness, and yearning through her use of earthy tones, indigenous iconography, text, and vibrant colors. She identifies colorism and discrimination towards Native Americans by other indigenous peoples as well as non-natives to create pieces in a pursuit to grasp the idealism of enlightenment.
Artist Bio
Born in New Mexico and raised in different areas of the American landscape, Summer Zah is an Oklahoma based artist who explores her uncommon upbringing to prescribe which story is being told in her work. She graduated from East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma with a BFA and BA in Native American history—a blend of knowledge that transformed how she tells her narrative.
