Through repetition and layering, my anxieties fell before me in a mix of mediums and figures.
Artist Statement
- Our lives are overflowing with a flood of information that we receive every time we look at our phones. This series began as a way for me to collect the data I was receiving and review it later. After months of researching the information I concluded that history was repeating itself rapidly and there was too much information to process. The pieces are made with traditional and modern mediums that layer over one another. Layering is utilized to show repetition, relationships, and forgetfulness.
- I began by taking screenshots of Facebook posts, laser cutting the images onto acrylic plastic, and then matching each image to a block of wood cut by the laser cutter into the shape of a phone. The oil painted squares behind each image reflect the messages of the image, or my mood after viewing it over and over again. The colors changed over the months that I painted each layer of oil paint, representing my growing anxiety and frustration.
- I am sharing my documentation to insight change through a curated collection of information that I have gathered. Through gestural abstraction, the artwork is given more room to be interpreted by a wider audience. By seeing my anxiety, I hope viewers who relate feel calmed in knowing they are not alone. In a year full of screens, misinformation, and separation, sometimes the only comfort I have is knowing that I do not suffer alone.
Artist Bio
Calli Heflin is an artist from Oklahoma who focuses on multimedia political statements. In 2019, she received an honorable mention award at the OSU Research Week Reception. Heflin founded a drawing lab with the OSU Horseman’s Association where she demonstrated gestural drawing of Horses. From 2018 to 2020 she was a Museum Associate at the OSU Museum of Art. In 2017, she taught a demonstration to the Stillwater community for the OSU Museum of Art. In 2017, she was an art teacher’s aide at Stillwater Middle School and volunteered at the Oklahoma Art’s Conference of 2016. In 2017 Heflin worked with a group of artists to paint the mural Locla Homa Grown at a Food Pyramid in Stillwater, OK. Heflin received a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Oklahoma State University in the Spring of 2020.
