I am absorbed by why people act through different emotions and the subconscious reasoning behind it.

Artist Statement

Obscura is a testament to all the tribulations I have been through during my life. My entire college career I have made art for other people as most of my work outside of college, this time I wanted to express my true style in a way that has complexity.
Psychology has been an interest of mine for as long as I can remember and has created an awareness for emotions in myself and others. I am absorbed by why people act through different emotions and the subconscious reasoning behind it. Each painting is projecting a state of being through symbolic language. The faces represent a personified version of these plants and their meaning. I have continually associated facial expressions with different emotions – these are rendered to show the most important aspects of their facial representation. They are complemented by their matching floral print overlaying an abstracted watercolor.
Plants have always amazed me: flowers especially. I am inspired by their natural beauty and its role in the natural world. My art kin includes Kehinde Wiley, Cindy Sherman, and Yoko Ono. My printmaking is inspired by traditional tattooing because the history of most tattoo styles lies in ancient printmaking and I genuinely enjoy the existent tattooing process. Through experimental progressions of layering multiple media, the painting has gone on a journey that is projected throughout the concept and space of the show. The layering represents my path through life experiences and the emotions that go along with them.

Artist Bio

As a multi-media artist, when I create for myself I like to explore ideas that interest me and use introspection to create a visualization of how I interpret them. Psychology has been a vast awareness of mine for as long as I can remember. I am absorbed by why people act through different emotions and the subconscious reasoning behind it.  Most of my commission work is based in family portraits, including pets. I enjoy creating these because I also get to learn the stories behind every client and that is something that is special to me. Although most of my work comes from a deep-rooted place, sometimes I just create for the visual gratification. I have worked in so many mediums, but painting, printmaking, and sculpture are my main concentration.
