Artist Statement

My challenge is creating a visual story that you, the viewer, can walk into and look around. Most of the time I paint on location, carrying my “studio” in my backpack harmonizing with the elements, moving shadows and the sun alike. The wind, well, that’s another story.

Influenced by the Russian Impressionists who used strong colors, patterns and shapes, my paintings provide a way to hold onto a memory in a way a photograph simply cannot do.

I work in gouache, an opaque water color, which allows me to react and share what I’m feeling in a fast-changing outdoor environment.

Artist Bio

undefinedJay was born and raised in Flint, Michigan. With his wife, Melissa, he has lived in Florida and Tennessee before making Edmond, OK his home since 2018.undefined

It wasn’t until the late 1990s when he found his way into The Romeo Art Studio (Romeo, MI) where he re-discovered his brush. Smitten again by art, Jay began planning his escape from the corporate world. In April 2015, he repurposed his priorities and life took on a whole new color palette.

When Jay discovered gouache, he fell headfirst into the most challenging medium he'd ever met.

His gouache landscape paintings provide a way to hold onto a memory in a way a photograph cannot do. Jay creates that memory painting on location carrying his “studio” in his backpack. If the weather's bad, he'll be in the studio enjoying another day of painting.

He is currently displaying his plein air and studio works at Gallery Grazioso in Guthrie, OK

Jay volunteers as a “Paint Buddy”, supporting Art with a Heart, a philanthropic organization that pairs artists and children with cancer at the Jimmy Everest Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders in OKC, OK.
