Artist Survival Kit Workshops
The Artist Survival Kit (ASK) is an ongoing series of events that promote professionalism and is structured as a helpful forum for Oklahoma artists. Open to all Oklahoma artists, ASK activities provide artists with the necessary information to succeed in their careers and build a sense of community among diverse artists from across the state.
Combining information that promotes professional excellence with opportunities for networking and collaborative learning, the various components of ASK provide face-to-face, printed and electronic methods for artists to build economic self-reliance and create networks. The ASK program develops the professional careers of artists, helping them thrive and not just survive.

Do you have a skill or knowledge that would be helpful to artists?
Are you an artist and would like to develop your ability to speak about your work or make public presentations?
Join this thorough and friendly retreat for artists and educators of artists.
Participants in the weekend retreat will improve their ability to articulate artistic and career concepts, educate others and make public presentations. Led by innovative educator Jane Varmecky, the retreat will include interactive training about adult education techniques and the dynamics of group training. There will also be time to learn from and share with other participants.
OVAC’s hope is that many retreat participants will develop their ideas into workshops or presentations for artists for a new OVAC program called
ARTiculate. Serving like a speaker’s bureau,
ARTiculate is a menu of workshops and lectures that will be promoted to universities, organizations and arts groups across the state. Retreat participants can submit to be a part of this new program and so could be hired to share their presentations.
ARTiculate presentations can focus on a variety of art topics, including the business of art or your own art practice.

Artistic careers may seem like a vocation, a calling, or, maybe, a compulsion. With no clear ladder of success, you define your career path based on the reality of your own artwork.
The workshop will help you examine the broad question of: “Who is the audience for my artwork?” Participants will assess their own skills, personality, and artistic vision and how those inclinations match with specific artistic professional options like commercial galleries, arts festival, teaching, etc. Also, the workshop will examine how your artistic professional life moves through cycles of growth and achievements, which likely intersect with other artists’ career stages.
Artist, curator and museum consultant Sunni Mercer and OVAC Director Julia Kirt will lead the workshop.
