With a mission to highlight Oklahoma artists ages 30 and under, Momentum Tulsa will feature painting, photography, sculpture, film, performance, and large-scale installations. Following the opening event, the exhibition will remain on display through October 23.

All Oklahoma artists ages 30 and under are invited to submit artwork for the Momentum exhibition by the deadline of September 13. Entry is by digital submission and full details are available here. Awards for artists total over $1,000 and include Viewers Choice in Visual Art and Performance Art, selected by Momentum attendees.

As a part of Momentum Tulsa, three artists received $1,500 Momentum Spotlight commissions to create new artwork. The Momentum Spotlight artists were chosen in May for the program to receive cash commissions and three months of interaction with the guest curators. Selected Momentum Spotlight artists are Tara Najd Ahmadi, Oklahoma City; Sherwin R. Tibayan, Norman; and May Yang, Tulsa.

Ahmadi is creating a short stop-motion animation titled Anti-Consume Tale. The project focuses on cultural consumption and the process of losing relationships with objects. Tibayan is collecting color slides taken by tourists in the ‘70s and ‘80s as part of a project investigating the role that images play in the way we remember our experiences. Yang’s project, American Dreaming, focuses on her background as a first generation Asian American and the constant clash of cultures it created in her household.

Guest curators select the art and awards for Momentum Tulsa from an open call to artists. This year, curators are Shannon Fitzgerald, an independent curator and formerly Chief Curator at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, and Sarah Jesse, a writer and educator selected as the Momentum Emerging Curator.
