VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH - July 2010
Emily Lewis

I’ve lived in Oklahoma my whole life, I grew up in Edmond and I went to Oklahoma State University. I received my BA in Art History in 2008. I met my Boyfriend, Ian at OSU and we currently live with our fat cat in the Asian District of Oklahoma City. I make animals out of thrift store socks in my spare time, and although I’m not very good at it I love to knit. I also enjoy antiquing, and going to estate sales. This picture was taken on our trip to San Francisco a few months ago.
Emily has consistently donated her time to distributing the OVAC bi-monthly magazine Art Focus Oklahoma all throughout the Oklahoma City area. Emily is also a former Art Focus intern and a thoughtful writer who donated her writing skills to the magazine. Thank you so much Emily, for being such a committed volunteer. We are lucky that every couple of months we get a visit from you and so do the many venues that receive the magazine!
Getting to know Emily Lewis:
How did you initially get involved with OVAC?
In 2007 my studio professor, Liz Roth recommended that I go and check out an OVAC internship…and I met Kelsey who’s super awesome. I didn’t actually do an internship until last summer, and it was a wonderful experience.
What is your favorite place to eat?
Sushi Neko!!!! Oh my gosh, I try to go there as much as possible! I absolutely insist on ordering the Crazy Cajun roll and the Red Canyon roll…with an appetizer of miso soup, and a glass of white wine. It makes for a wonderful evening, and it’s my favorite for date night.
What is on you book shelf at home?
Like 6 D.H. Lawrence novels, a couple of really depressing Thomas Hardy books. Madame Bovary which is amazing and every woman should read. Some arduous Dostoyevsky novels…And like a whole shelf worth of Kurt Vonnegut. And on top are some pictures of me and Ian in New York.
What is something that we would never guess about you?
I love hats! I don’t really know how many you have to own to have a collection…but I’m working on it. I love watching old movies and judging women on what hats they’re wearing. I only feel really comfortable when I’m wearing a hat…I buy a lot of hats at estate sales.
